Preparation for Unit 13 Sight Singing

Please click on the link below to access the sight singing assignment for next week. You must bring the assignment to your sight singing lesson. You may choose to print it out, or to view it on a laptop or tablet device. Please do not attempt to read the assignment from your phone in the lesson. This seldom results in a high score.

Instructions

Syncopated rhythm can be found in music of all cultures and eras. In genres such as modern Western popular musics, it feels so natural to perform in syncopated rhythm that the sight of the notation can come as a surprise.

Syncopation is frequently found in music of the Baroque and Classical eras, often in combination with chains of suspensions and resolutions. Another genre in which syncopation is a key rhythmic feature is ragtime. In Scott Joplin’s instructional School of Ragtime, he explains the procedure for learning how to compose and perform syncopations.
